When is a room more than a room? When it is a room at Cornerstone’s new building.
Adopting a room for a resident who will move into the new Cornerstone building in June 2011 means more that simply providing the space for a homeless woman to live in.

It is an investment of $5,500 in long term security for her where she can live in safety and with dignity.

An adopter is providing a home with all that entails. She will have her own key to the door which will open into a self-contained suite.  In it will be a bedroom with a sitting area and a table and chairs.  A small kitchen area will include a small fridge, microwave, and the basic amenities so that each woman will be able to prepare a simple meal for herself if she chooses to do so.  Each unit will have its own bathroom.  Within the building will be shared laundry facilities and
common areas for socializing.  To many of us, these are things we take for granted in our own homes. For a woman who has experienced years of life on the street, this home will provide security and safety beyond her wildest dreams.

As important as her home will be, the support she will be able to access in this setting may well be more important. Healthy meals and medical attention will be available.  Skilled professional staff will offer counselling and advice, job training and life skills development and support.

Adopting a room offers a new life to both older women as well as younger ones, vulnerable women whose prospects for the future have been despair and poverty with no dignity.  Having one of the 42 rooms will be a life-altering opportunity for each of them.
