THERE ARE MANY BRIDGETS IN OTTAWA. More than 100 women of all ages seek emergency shelter each night; an increasing number are seniors. Annually, more than 1000 women are homeless in Ottawa. Each of them is someone’s mother, daughter, sister, friend. All of them need emotional and physical support, a caring and safe place to begin their Journey of Hope to a future of dignity and respect and confidence. The Cornerstone shelter is the only facility just for women. The need grows, among senior women, for women with physical and mental health issues, for women recovering from addictions and for those who need support to live independently and with dignity in our community. Cornerstone's First SolutionsA SHELTER IS ONLY THE FIRST and only a temporary step to the ultimate goal of most homeless women who desperately need affordable and supportive housing. Cornerstone’s facility at 515 MacLaren Street provides safe long-term housing for up to twenty women. These women can live in the Cornerstone community with support from a team of highly-trained professional staff and committed volunteers. McPhail House provides supportive housing for six women who are making progress toward integration into the work force. They require minimal staff support during their time here, where they feel safe in its homey atmosphere.
